The Mayor of Runnymede for 2016-17 is Cllr Alan Alderson. Alan is also a member of the Egham Town Team. The role of Mayor is a non-political post and the Mayor is the civic head of the Council. Within the Borough, the Mayor takes precedence over all except the Queen and her representative, the Lord Lieutenant. This high standing is a traditional one of honour and dignity, rather than constitutional. The Mayor is the "first citizen of the Borough" and acts as an 'ambassador' for the Council. In addition, the Mayor acts as Chairman at meetings of the Full Council and has an important role in regulating proceedings and debate. This role is formally set out in the Council's Constitution. Runnymede is one of the few councils which continues to operate a committee-based system, giving every councillor - as opposed to simply a smaller executive - a practical input into the way local services are administered. As Mayor, Alan has decided to raise funds for Woking and Sam Beare Hospices, Home-start Runnymede and Woking,  and Dementia Carers Support in Runnymede. He aims to raise awareness of these charities throughout his one year term. Runnymede's Mayor is always delighted to be invited to local events, such as activities at schools, charity projects, and so on. If you want to invite the Mayor to come to your event, you can phone, write or send an email. Alan stood and was elected to Runnymede Borough Council in 2002 in the Egham Town Ward and has been re-elected ever since, he was inaugurated as Mayor on 18 May 2016. Alan is a Banker of 40 years' experience who retired as a Barclays Divisional Director in 2000 and is an Associate of the Institute of Bankers. He is married with 3 grown up children and 6 grandchildren and has lived in Egham for 34 years. His interests include: music, travel, football, and supporting the local community, particularly his local residents' association. Alan's Mayoress is his wife, Margaret, a retired school-teacher.
